During the day, I tried to keep faith that we’d get back to our time. Every time I faltered, I forced myself to go over the plans that would get me home. If I didn’t, I was afraid I’d fall apart. But, in the quiet of the night, curled up alone in bed, the thoughts crept in and I’d let the tears come.

The weeks had passed painfully slow. I began wondering if we’d ever get back. What would I do if we were stuck here? I spent many hours looking out at the stars thinking of Ever. If I couldn’t get back to her, would I ever love again? Would I want to? I’d certainly never love anyone the way I loved her. Maybe love wouldn’t be part of my future, but fighting the Wapi would be. If I had to stay in 3204, I would fight them until my dying breath.

“Jahzara?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you think if we made a recording of me telling my story and showing clips of the past from my chip that it would help? Either help the Freedom Fighters to keep fighting…or even open the eyes of those who tolerate the Wapi?” I asked.

The room was quiet, and I knew I had them thinking. Briar, who had been relaxing on the rejuvenation chair, jumped out of it. “That’s a great idea.”

“Occasionally I have one.” This made some of them laugh.

“I’m still betting you will get home,” Jahzara said. “I do think it’s a good idea though. I’m not sure we’ll do much good convincing many to turn against the Wapi especially with all the ‘safety measures’ they have here, but we can try, and we can send the message out to the Freedom Fighters and they can share it.”

Finally feeling useful, I said, “Let’s do it.”

After giving a heartfelt speech, I let Briar do her thing and along with Aiken, they were able to pull together a great video message to uplift spirits and help people remember who they were fighting and what they were fighting for.

By the end of the third earthweek, we finally had the information we needed to implement the plan. Briar crossed the room to where I sat, knees to my chin, staring out into space. “The tech virus is finished. Once we have the tachyons and the matter, we release the virus and get out of here.”

I looked around the room. I wanted to go home more than anything, but the people in this room had become family too. If we had to leave them behind, couldn’t we help them in some way?

“Briar, since Jahzara and Aiken can’t leave this room, is there a way we can jump them to our ship? We could bring them to a friendly planet or some of the other Freedom Fighters.”

Before Briar could answer, Jahzara did, “That is thoughtful of you, Kaci. We’re needed here.”

“But you could go to a planet, spend time outside of these walls, smell the flowers, step into a river,” I argued.

She sighed.
